初夏にニューイングランドとミシガン湖周辺を旅したのですが、そのとき、店に入ると店員さんが声かけてくるフレーズが「How's it going?」だった。これって、いわゆる「いらっしゃいませ」みたいな決まり文句なんですか？
いわゆる学校英語では、"May I help you?"っていうフレーズを用い、それを「いらっしゃいませ」として捉えていますよね。私が大学時代に初めてアメリカに行き、サンフランシスコのGAPストアーで、会う店員みんなから"How's it going?"と尋ねられビビリまくった記憶があります^^;;;さて、さっそくネイティブに聞いてみましたよ！
Well, it's an informal greeting. I wouldn't expect a nicely dressed sales person to say it at the cosmetics counter, but you can expect it from somewhere like a dive store or car parts store. Even then, it's mostly a younger guy thing to say...and depending on what I was wearing. Basically, when you enter a store, you expect some sort of harassment from the employees. It's hard to find a store to just go shop and get it over with, you know? So, this is the imformal greeting of the staff to acknowledge that yes, they know you're here. If you did need help, this would be the time to say, "Hey dude, I'm looking for...大体の訳：えーと、これはインフォーマルなあいさつね！化粧品売り場のきちんとした身なりのお姉さんが言うような言葉じゃ絶対ないけれど、ダイバー用品だとか車の部品を売っている店かなんかでは聞く可能性のある言葉ね！たとえその場合でも、ほとんどは若い店員が使うのよね、その言葉。お客が何を着ているかにもよるけどね。基本的にネ、店に入るときって、店員にある種の”いやがらせ”をされるのよね。わかる？ただ店に行ってすぐ買い物を切り上げるなんてことは難しいのよ。だから、このHow's it going っていうのは「はい、あなたがそこにいることを認識していますよ」ということを表すインフォーマルなあいさつなの！もしあなたが助けを必要とするなら、その時こそ「～を探しているんですけど」という時なのよね。
上の意見から言えば、やっぱり"How's it going?"っていうのは「いらっしゃいませ」という意味を含んでいることになりますよね！なかなか奥が深い言葉なんですね！How's it going?という言葉は！ "Hi, how are you?" "how's it going?" "are you alright?"You're suppose to answer, "Fine, how are you?" regardless. It's sort of bad form to say, "well, since you asked, I've got a nasty cold sore on the inside of my mouth. I think it could be herpes. So, how are you?"Although it is a lot of fun to respond that way, just to see how people react. Sometimes, people will say "Hi, how are you?" and keep going. They're gone before you can even answer. Here, it's suppose to be polite to inquire about a person. It's suppose to show that you care and have a genuine interest in their well-being. Kind of loses it's effect when you hear it from waiters, shop clerks, mailmen...
上の文をかいつまんで説明すると、アメリカでは、Hi, how are you? How's it going? Are you alright?などと見知らぬ人や店員から聞かれたら、もしあなたが仮に体調が悪くても、まずは"Fine, how are you?"と答えればよいということです。アメリカでは、社交辞令のようにこれら言葉を用いるようで、How's it going?と言って、相手の答えを聞く前に去ってしまう人もいるようです！相手のことを気にかけているというスタンスがアメリカでは礼儀正しいとされているわけなのです！
