日本では、今日1月7日に七草粥(ななくさがゆ)を食べる風習があります。この七草粥。英語では

seven herb rice porridge

といいます。七草粥の由来については、ウィキペディアを見ると、

【春の七草や餅などを具材とする塩味の粥で、その一年の無病息災を願って食べられる。祝膳や祝酒で弱った胃を休める為とも言われる。この行事は、平安時代には行われていたが、室町時代の汁物が原型ともされている。】


と説明されています。お正月料理で疲れた胃を休めるという意味もあるのですね!

 In Japan, people eat the seven herb rice porridge "nanakusagayu" on the morning of January 7th.
→日本では、1月7日の朝に七草粥を食べます。

This came from the belief that by eating rice porridge with the young herbs in which the vitality of spring dwells would drive off evil and protect one from various illnesses.
→これは、春の生命力の宿った若菜をおかゆに入れて食べることで、邪気を払い、万病を予防できると信じられてきたことに由来します。

【七草粥を英語で詳しく説明】

 Nanakusa gayu is a rice porridge with seven kinds of wild herbs in early spring, which is eaten on the morning of January 7th. It is said that by eating this porridge, people can not only fend off evil spirits but also avoid various kinds of diseases for the year.
 Medically speaking, eating wild herbs in the early spring when green vegetables are scarce means taking in vitamins to take care of one's health after eating and drinking too much during the festival season.

「七草がゆ」とは早春の7種類の野草が入ったおかゆで、1月7日の朝に食べるものです。このおかゆを食べれば、1年の邪気をはらうだけでなく、万病を除くと言われています。
 医学的に言えば、青菜の少ない早春にこれらの野草を食べるのは、お正月に食べ過ぎたり飲み過ぎたりした後の養生のために、ビタミンを摂取するという意味合いもあります。

お雑煮(Ozoni): Rice cake and vegetable soup

お雑煮とは、正月3が日の間に出される特別な汁料理です。標準的な雑煮といえば、すまし汁し立てで、これに餅、カマボコ、野菜類を入れ、風味を増すために三つ葉や柚の皮の細切りを加えます。お雑煮は文字通り「色々な材料を煮た汁」を意味し、お正月のお祝いの期間中、おせち料理と一緒に食べるものです。

Ozoni or Zoni is a rice cake and vegetable soup and one of the New Year's dishes. Flavor and ingredients, including meat or fish and all kinds of vegetables, differ according to the region or family. Generally speaking, zoni with square-shaped rice cakes in clear soup is preferred in eaten in eastern Japan, while zoni with round-shaped rice cakes in miso soup is eaten in western Japan.




「お雑煮は餅や野菜の入ったスープで、正月料理のひとつです。味付けや具材(肉、魚、野菜の種類)も地域や家庭によって異なります。一般的に澄ました汁に角餅を入れた雑煮は東日本で、また一方で味噌汁に丸餅を入れた雑煮は西日本で食べられます。」

Zoni is a kind of soup with round or rectangular-shaped rice cakes and vegetables in a broth, which is eaten during the New Year. Originally, zoni was offered to Toshigami-sama, the god of the year, and was believed to have the power to Toshigami-sama.It is said that eating zoni in the New Year is a kind of naorai, a feast after Shinto rituals where people eat and drink what was offered to God.「雑煮」とは、丸形や四角の餅を野菜と一緒にだし汁に入れた吸い物の一種で、正月にいただきます。雑煮の起源は、その年の神、つまり年神様に備えたもので、年神様のパワーを宿していると信じられていました。新年に雑煮を食べることは一種の直会(なおらい)といわれていますが、直会とは、神事が終わった後で神に捧げられた食べ物や酒を頂く酒宴のことです。[日本の年中行事を英語で紹介する事典]
