The origins of Labor Thanksgiving Day can be traced back to the 7th century, when the emperor conducted the first Niinamesai ceremony. The Niinamesai is one of the most important of all Shinto ceremonies held in the Imperial Palace, where the Emperor offers the year's harvested crops to the gods, and the Emperor and the gods eat them together. This is a ceremony to thank the gods for the year's harvest and to pray for a good harvest the following year.
Before World War II, when Shinto was the national religion, the Niinamesai was a national holiday, and it was not until after the war that it became Labor Thanksgiving Day. Today, the ceremony is still held by the Emperor himself in his palace.
