A few years ago, in Tampa, someone got the bright idea to build full size replicas of the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria and sail them into the harbor for people to see on Columbus Day. Do you know about Christopher Columbus? He “discovered” America. Actually, he thought he was in India. That’s why he called the native people here Indians. His 3 ships were the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Columbus Day is a holiday to celebrate him even though now people are learning that the first thing he did was enslave the native people or kill them off everywhere he went. Places like Cuba used to have a whole race that he just wiped out completely. So, anyway, there was a bunch of Native American Indians that showed up to protest and since I knew a guy from college who was going to be there, I went too. You know who else was there? Russel Means! He’s been in a lot of movies, like Last of the Mohicans.
Columbus Day was first celebrated on October 12, 1792 to honor the day Christopher Columbus landed in the Bahamas in 1492. One hundred years later, it was celebrated again at the urging of President Benjamin Harrison. Since 1920, it has been celebrated annually and, in 1971, became a federal legal holiday to be celebrated on the second Monday in October. The traditional Columbus Day in the United States includes a parade down New York’s Fifth Avenue. Parades and pageantry are often featured in smaller towns and cities. In recent years, the holiday has been rejected by many people who view it as a celebration of conquest and genocide. In its place, Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated. Many Latin American countries celebrate this day as Dia de la Raza (Day of the Race). This day celebrates the Spanish heritage of the Latin American peoples and includes brightly colored fiestas.
