お正月は、英語で

New Year's Day

といいます。

★ New Year's Day is considered to be the most important annual event in Japan.
「正月は日本では一番大切な年中行事と考えられています」

★ We exchange New Year's cards called "Nengajo" on New Year's Days.
「正月には年賀状を交換します」

★ We go to Shinto shrines in our best dress to pray for good luck and happiness for the year.
「晴れ着を着て神社に初詣に行きます」

★ Children are given a gift of money called "Otoshidama".
「子ども達はお年玉と呼ばれるお金をもらいます」

★ We make our resolutions for the year on New Year's Day.
「元旦には一年の計を立てます」

★ During the first three days, we don't do household chores such as cooking and cleaning.
「3が日は炊事や掃除などの家事をしません」

→古くからのいわれで、三が日に
・掃除をすると、神様を掃いてしまう
・水仕事や風呂に入ると、福の神を流してしまう
・火を使うと、火の神様を怒らせてしまう
・刃物を使うと、良縁を切ってしまう
・大金を使うと、その年が散財の年になってします
と言われています!
